In celebration of the Mars Science Laboratory landing safely and successfully on the planet Mars, we should take a second to appreciate some of the truly marvellous and wonderful things we would not have or know were it not for science.

  • This Shirt
  • When astronauts are in space, their spine has been known to lengthen and straighten out due to the effects of zero gravity. Also, once in space, one cannot burp.
  • The hottest planet in the solar system is Venus, with an average surface temperature of 864 F or 462 C, even though Mercury is a mere 46 million kilometres from the sun at its closest point. Venus is around 108 million kilometres.
  • The cosmos contains around 50,000,000 galaxies and in a normal galaxy, there are an estimated 100,000,000,000 and 1,000,000,000,000 stars.
  • Saturn has a lower density than water. So if one could find a large enough body of water, Saturn would float when placed upon it.
  • Mars is red because of high amounts of iron oxide in its soil. In other words, it is rusty.

Some other fun mars facts include:

  • No Human could even survive the low pressure of Mars without a space suit. If one were to expose themselves to the Martian atmosphere the oxygen in their blood would turn into bubbles.
  • The atmosphere on Mars is so thin that water literally cannot exist. It can only exist as water vapour or ice.
  • Mars has the most violent and largest dust storms in the solar system. These dust storms can last for weeks, have winds reach over 125 miles per hour, and can cover the entire planet.
  • Mars’ crust is thicker than Earth’s and is made up of one piece, unlike Earth’s crust which consists of several moving plates.
  • Only one third of spacecraft’s sent to Mars have ever been successful
  • The gravity on Mars is only 38 percent that of Earth. So if you weigh 150 pounds on Earth, you would weigh 57 pounds on Mars.
  • One day on Mars is known as a “sol”. There are 668 sols in a martian year.
